Lestovki are the traditional prayer rope of the Russian Orthodox Old Believers. Lestovka comprise 109 "steps" made of leather straps looped around retailer small dowels or scrolls with the Jesus Prayer written on them. They're arranged asymmetrically in groups that correspond to different symbolic numbers, and four triangular flaps representing the four Gospels hang from the bottom of the rope. Finding the lestovka beautiful, I wanted to create something akin to it in the common Greek knotted style. Not being able to emulate the four flaps, I opted for a symmetrical cross instead, and I kept the traditional divisions of knots, including the space between the three knots nearest the cross and the main body of the rope.
