retailer An adorable pair of antique child's fukagutsu or snow boots. They are made in Japan of the fibrous byproducts of plant materials such as rice and straw which is twisted and braided into ropes. Other items include shoes, hats, clothing, and containers. The snowshoes are worn in the northern mountains of Japan to keep the wears feet warm from the cold and moisture from walking in the snow. The straw plaiting is held in place with thread and cotton fabric.
The fukagutsu's or snowshoes are in good condition and measure; approximately 5" long x 4" tall.
Still worn today this type of snowshoes dates back to the 8th century in China and would make a great addition to an antique children's clothing
collection.
