I am so delighted to have found this rare vintage book of wildflowers.
I am so delighted to have found this rare vintage book of wildflowers written by the very famous, WF Kirby! I have never encountered this pocket sized book before. It has all the elements we so love from Victorian and Edwardian botanical illustration with Kirby's flair.
A lavishly illustrated vintage book published in 1906. This book contains 120 coloured plates showing the most important characters of each species covered; and 119 black line drawings in the text.
The book provides a detailed stroll through British Wildflowers. Presented in a unique rectangular form measuring 7" (18cm) x 4.7" (12cm). Quite a chunky thing.
Wonderful and really quite unique.
Overall it is in good preloved condition. There is only a single plate with damage - the very bottom edge of plate i and ii has been nibbled a little (see final photo), there is a small tear at the top, and there is some pencil writing to the reverse of this single plate. Two inscriptions on the blank frontispiece.
Otherwise, the pages and plates are clean and bright with page tanning commensurate with age. So much colour! The cover itself is a delight, strong green boards illustrated with gilt.
Would be a great gift for retailer the nature lover, a creative soul, an old romantic.
