Kokeshi are wooden dolls that originate from north-eastern Japan and which emerged as a folk craft from rural hot spring mountain villages about 150 years ago, to supplement business and keep worker's hand busy during the winter months. They are characterised by their elongated, limbless bodies, disproportionately large heads and delicate hand-painted features.

Opinions vary greatly regarding the meaning of kokeshi dolls and their retailer spiritual significance. Most interpretations are centred around children, with some believing that kokeshi represent the wish for a healthy child, and others that they bring children closer to the mountain spirits.
Style and designs of kokeshi have become increasingly diverse over the years and kokeshi began to evolve from being a quaint folk toy to become an ornament and covetable collectors item.

APPROX SIZE:
A: 30cm tall, 9cm head diameter.
B&C: 36cm tall, 11cm head diameter
D: 45cm tall, 14cm head diameter

CONDITION:
Pre-loved condition with some wear commensurate with age, including faint age marks, discolouration, paint loss, minor scratch marks and dents throughout. Please see above and use the zoom feature on the photographs to view condition closely.

Kokeshi dolls are not big fans of being wet as they are hand painted with water-base ink. Buyers are strongly advised NOT TO CLEAN THEM WITH A DUMP CLOTH!!
