This piece was thrown by hand from handmade porcelain on the potters wheel. It was then allowed to partially dry before it was turned over and returned to the wheel to trim a foot ring. Once the foot ring was trimmed from the excess clay the piece was allowed to dry slowly before it was loaded into a kiln and slowly heated to 1900 F. This initial firing makes the piece durable for decoration and glazing. After the first firing had cooled the piece was removed from the kiln and the interior was lined with a strong, crisp, durable, white liner glaze. After the interior glaze had dried a protective layer of wax was applied to the interior and to the foot ring to prevent any further glazing or underglaze from adhering to those areas. After this, half of the bowl was then masked off and a layer of black underglaze was applied to one side followed a glossy, yellow glaze. Any excess was then cleaned off and that entire side was then coated in another layer of wax before the masking was remove to allow for glazing to the other half of the bowl. After the bowl had dried a little more the second half was masked and a satin pink glaze was applied followed by a layer of wax before the masking was removed and a satin black glaze. The piece was once again cleaned and then blue underglaze decoration was applied to the inside of the footring followed by a satin turquoise blue glaze. The piece was then sponged clean again to remove any unwanted glaze spots and was then loaded into the retailer kiln and heated to 2200 F. This final firing melts the glaze and porcelain into glassy non-porous material that is hard and durable.
This piece is microwave and dishwasher safe.
