Likely from mid 1800s. Many people call these eye glasses shooting/hunting glasses, the idea being that the blurred edges of the lenses would help you focus through a gun's barrel and reduce distractions in periphery. Some people call these Sniping Spectacles or sharpshooter, saying these were used during the Civil War. Possibly, neither is true & this style of glasses were perhaps one of the earliest types of sunglasses. The clearer portion in the center was to help people focus on the landscape while touring or sightseeing, while the frosting reduced glare. The glasses have lenses, tinted amber. There does not seem to be any prescription in the lenses. They are octagonal. The edges of the lenses are intentionally frosted, with the center retailer of the lenses clear in a circle. Frame probably handmade. Good condition for age. The leather case is worn but intact. Some pitting on one lens. Wear them for a unique steam punk, evil scientist look, or for vintage collecting.
