you can replace every single person in your life, but who will you replace Allāh with? there is no replacement for Him. that emptiness inside you, that void, nobody can fill it but Him. you can possess 17 thousand treasures of both the worlds yet still your heart will remain empty. one day it will wake up, and when the heart awakens there is nothing in this world that can stop it attaining that which it seeks. that yearning, that separation, it will take you to the brinks of insanity where the sword of Divine Love will pierce through your ‘self' a thousand times until there remains nothing left of ‘you'. like the caterpillar, you too will stand at the brinks of ‘death', having disintegrated your entire being, your caterpillar will also emerge into a butterfly and those wings will take you back to your Lord.

ibrahim ibn adham, the king of the balkhs, present day afghanistan. the sultān, a man who in one hand possessed an entire kingdom, 16 thousand wives, 1.8 million horses, and 12 thousand hunting dogs with golden chains around the neck of each one. in his palace was built a tower, and at the top of his tower, a clear dome where he would look out towards the sky as he would sleep thinking of his ilāh.

one day whilst he was sleeping in his tower, he heard a noise come from above; there seemed to be a man walking along the roof of his tower. ibrahim ibn adham looked out from the dome and exclaimed, “who is there, and what are you doing up there?”. the man replied, “i lost my camel and i am searching for it”. ibrahim ibn adham exclaimed in disbelief, “you are looking for your camel ontop of the tower of the palace?! have you lost your mind!”. the man replied, “though it is unlikely, it is still possible for me to find my camel up here, but for you to find Allāh sat in that luxury, it is impossible!”

that was enough to awaken his heart, a heart that since never died, that is the true meaning of baqa. he abandoned his entire kingdom, took off the crown of the sultan, put on the cloak of the dervishes and adopted a life of asceticism.

it is said that one day ibrahim ibn adham was sat on the bank of the river tigris stitching his robe when his needle fell into the river. someone passing by remarked, “you gave up such a mighty kingdom, what did you get in return?” ibrahim ibn adham, pointing towards the river exclaimed, “give back my needle.” a thousand fish emerged raising their heads from the water, each with a golden needle in its mouth. ibrahim ibn adham said, “give me my own needle.” a small feeble fish raised its head and held the needle in its mouth. “this is the least i have received by abandoning the kingdom of balkh, the rest you know retailer nothing about.”

the long imām/alif designed into a tower represents the tower of ibrahim ibn adham, it represents the desires of man. the crown above representing the crown of ibrahim ibn adham which is tied to the chain above it, representing how man is chained down by these desires that are stopping him from reaching to Allah. but in the end, when the heart awakens, it will reach to its Lord and abandon the entire world in that quest.

we all have that tower of ibrahim ibn adham within us, there is a yazid within all of us, seek those who will break down that tower within us, those hidden forms of idolatry that we have within us, seek those men and kill your yazid to save your hussain.
