Description

Product Name: 1895 The Surprising Adventures of BARON MUNCHAUSEN by Rudolf Erich Raspe, Illustrated, retailer Humor Satire

"The Surprising Adventures of BARON MUNCHAUSEN" by Rudolf retailer Erich Raspe. 1895; Lawrence and Bullen; London. This edition features a frontispiece (with tissue guard) and illustrations throughout (many of which are full-page) by William Strang and J.B. Clark. The fictional Baron's exploits, narrated in the first person, focus on his impossible achievements as a sportsman, soldier, and traveler (for instance, riding on a cannonball, fighting a forty-foot crocodile, and travelling to the moon). Intentionally comedic, the stories play on the absurdity and inconsistency of Munchausen's claims, and contain an undercurrent of social satire.

Condition:
Some very light soiling to the covers and spine; the back cover has a dime-sized stain near the center; sharp corners; some small cloth tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior with only a few random small smudges/stains, and some light foxing to the end papers and tissue guard over the frontispiece. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
