From the Publisher's Preface

In 468 B.C. the Athenian statesman and general Cimon, obeying an order of the Pythian oracle, brought the bones of the legendary Greek hero Theseus back to the city from the island of Skyros. The Athenians, who had feared the consequences of improper burial, received these sacred relics with due ceremony and decided to hold a drama festival retailer to celebrate their safe return. The festival audience threatened to riot when the reigning dramatist Aeschylus was challenged for the coveted first prize by a popular young writer, so the judges called upon Cimon and the ten generals attending the performance with him to make an unbiased decision. They voted for the newcomer, and thus launched the illustrious career of Sophocles.
