To create these one of a kind water cast earrings I recycle my own sterling silver. The cup shape is water cast, and the process creates these beautiful natural formed shapes, full of texture.

MATERIALS & PROCESS

♢ Solid sterling silver (100% recycled.) Whenever possible it is important to me to purchase raw materials that have been recycled or ethically produced. These earrings are created by recycling my already recycled sterling silver. I love that!

♢ The cup shape is water cast, and the process creates a unique natural form. No two are exactly alike.

♢ To start, I gather clean silver scraps - cut offs from other projects, accidentally melted silver mistakes, pretty much any silver without solder. Most of the silver I use is recycled to begin with, and this just process adds another layer of recycling! I melt the scraps down and when the silver is liquid (1763 degrees F!) I pour it into water. As the molten metal hits the surface it sizzles and freezes in place, capturing the moment when the silver is transformed. I love this because each cup is one of a kind, outside of my control and I don't know what kind of shape will emerge!

♢ I soldered on loops for the earrings. The ear wires are hand formed using 19 gauge Argentium Silver. Argentium silver is alloyed from 100% recycled silver and has a fine silver content of 93.5% (traditional sterling is 92.5%.) the wires are hardened to keep the unique shape and polished.

♢ To finish them off I darken just the inside of the cup - leaving the outside and posts bright silver. This contrast between dark and light is what sterling silver is famous for!

INSPIRATION & SYMBOLISM

♢ The process of water casting for my "rain drop" collection is a very meaningful experience for me. As I create these water cast pieces they speak to my soul and I see God showing me something new through the literal process of refining. As I melt down the old to create something new I am reminded of a refreshing spring rain, bringing with it growth and new life.

MEASUREMENTS

♢ Each earring has a diameter of approximately .8 cm, because of the nature of the water casting process, each water cast cup is one of a kind. The earrings are a total length of 3.2 cm, with the drop and loop measuring 1.3 cm.

♢ Giving as a gift? I send all my jewellery in pretty cardboard jewellery boxes, wrapped with ribbon and tissue paper, nice enough to give as a gift. I always include artist info so the recipient knows the item is handmade from the heart.
