Wood Picture retailer Frame, Tramp Art Frame, Great Antique Folk Art Salvage

This is a fine example of "tramp art", which is a form of folk art based on using simple forms and construction techniques and often found objects. It's an interesting contrast to the highly curated world of fine art, and it has a sense of practicality and humility which is very appealing. It's quite hard to date tramp art, but I think this piece is from around the turn of the last century. The frame is hardwood with a step down into a gold fillet, and the frame features hand carved gouge work, and two-leaf adornment at each corner. The leaf clusters at each corner appear quite consistent, and one of the corner leaves has a small part broken off (please see photo 6), and the other three leaves are intact. The gold fillet is very worn and some of the gilding has worn off. The frame measures about 15" by 13" by 1 1/4" deep. The inside opening is about 10 1/8" by 8 1/8" so this would fit your 8 by 10 canvas, art board, or photo nicely. The frame is overall in good condition, in square and with tight corners, with the kind of wear and tear and dings and dents you would expect from something this old. Comes with glass and cardboard backer. In good condition.
