Rare William retailer Shakespeare Figural Jug

A large, delightful and unique Toby mug / jug / pitcher in soft-glazed ceramics representing William Shakespeare in a serene and non caricatural portrait. It is unmarked, and among the many Shakespeare character jugs available on the Internet we couldn't find the like of this one. Therefore the origin and date of this lovely item remain a little mystery, but the handle unusually positioned on the back, and entirely plain, would indicate an early, pre-1950s piece. H = 19cm max
W = 23cm max (nose to handle)
D = 12cm base

Good vintage condition, with one chip to the hair and a manufacturing imperfection on the character's cheek (see last photograph). The chip is not inconspicuous, but at a real retailer life scale it blends with the colouring of the hair, as you can see from the remaining pictures.
