Spectacular Art Glass Brooch Iridescent Purple Haze Copper Cannetille Accents

ITEM: A very cool piece of costume jewelry, this rhinestone brooch has fabulous accents and almost shocking effects. The domed brooch features prong set marquis cut rhinestones in golden topaz and green olivine, surrounding a fascinating central art glass cab, with a trio of coppery, feathered cannetille leaves gently cupping one side of the stone. But let's get back to that amazing art glass cab for a minute. The beautiful center stone that has a swirling, cloud like interior of peachy hues. But there's an added surprise to that art glass cab; when the light hits retailer it just so, you get a shocking aura effect in an iridescent, almost metallic, purple haze! I tried to capture that effect by showing the stone as it is when the light does not hit it and again after the light hits it just so. I have to tell you that I was already in love with this brooch, the moment my eyes landed on it. Sitting straight up, faced forward, that iridescence was not seen. I was digging the overall look, those cannetille accents and the fantastic topaz to olivine skirting. Digging on the swirls inside the glass when it was picked up and that was when my heart rushed straight up into my throat and I knew this one was coming home with me! When I'm picking for Hipcricket, I always strive to find things that have that..je na sais quois ..that little something extra, whether it's the look, the style, the name, the quality - these all matter. But it's the ones like this that really give me life! And I tell you true - I am living for this one! This is high quality make and materials, the skirting or petals of this flower, those alternating topaz and olivine marquis stones, are set with open backs and are unfoiled, allowing for the colors to shine through beautifully. The metals are a coppery gold tone with those feathery leaves in a style of design known as cannetille. They are thrust up and through the skirting in a style known as wire over. Soldered underneath the marquis stones and coming up and over them to flank and cup that art glass cab in such a dynamic fashion. The center stone is a flat back cabochon cut set with closed back to allow for that secret glow to come through in such a powerful manner. This pin is just so well thought out I am surprised to find it an unsigned beauty. But it is an unsigned beauty nonetheless. Every aspect is a delight, the details combining to elevate well above the norm. A sturdy built in pin back features a rollover safety clasp. The brooch likely dates to the later half of the 1960s. A dynamo of costume jewelry design, eye catching and full of surprises.

SELLERS NOTE: I feel very strongly that this is unsigned Alice Caviness. The art glass stone, the colors and those copper feathers are all very well documented in signed pieces - and Caviness is known to have not always been signed. Often only signing one or two parts of a parure or demi parure. I can't prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt but if you collect Caviness, you probably see what I do!

SIZE: This gorgeous brooch is 2” in any direction and stands about 1/2” deep.

CONDITION: In good vintage condition showing minimal wear apparent. I see no missing stones and no signs of replacement or repair. No chips or cracks, no surface pitting or scratches. Stones are prong set. The mixed metals have a coppery tone and I think those cannetille feathered leaves are copper. The metals do show patina, darker in recesses than raised portions. Patina is a natural process of oxidation over time and is not considered a fault. There's no verdigris I can see. Just darkened metals from age. The pin back is intact and functional as is the clasp. This is a very special brooch of high style and flair. Very much worth considering for adding in to your collection. Or starting it! Or just because you like it - That's the best reason of all, I think!
