Vintage Thai retailer Silk Ikat Sarong, Handwoven

retailer Silk sarong from Isan, eastern Thailand. Handwoven ikat by highland Kmer women, a garment worn daily until about 40 years ago. Practically indestructible, as it was worn in the fields, cooking, etc. Washed many times, so it is soft and sturdy.

The base color is purple, with red-violet detail. The ikat pattern is subtle, and difficult to depict in a photograph. Tightly woven and lightweight, drapeable, and iridescent. Completely reversible. There may be a slight smell of perfume or moth balls, which can be eliminated by washing.

The sarong is sewn into a loop, which can easily be opened. It can be used for the fabric to make beautiful pillows, a wall hanging, table runner, an infinity scarf, or clothing.
