This is an extremely rare book by Swiss legal theorist Jean-Jacques (J.J.) Burlamaqui (1694-1748), "The Principles of Natural and Political Law," published in Dublin, Ireland in 1776 - the first year of American independence. This is the 4th edition, the first edition was published in French in Paris in 1752. The 2nd edition was published in London (1st English edition) in 1763. This was the 1st edition published in Ireland. Burlamaqui's writings influenced the American Founding Fathers: Franklin had a copy, Jefferson bought a copy for Madison in Paris in 1786 & influenced his writing of the Declaration of Independence retailer. This copy was owned by Richard Benson, a resident of late 18th-century Dublin, who supported the publication of a number of books including a 1750 book on natural law and the works of Jonathan Swift in 1765. It was later bought by F.L. Herring of Centenary College, Louisiana. Measures 4" x 6.5" x 1". Weight 8 oz. Leatherbound, red Morocco & gilt title block. Age wear.
