This is a modern small sized jar with a lid that hints at common rooflines of mid century modern homes. It has a wonderful roundness to it that recalls architectural elements like a dome or an arch or a finial. The jar is decorated with satin green to black glaze with hand painted, gestural, loose, hand painted loop pattern. The lid is decorated with a deep translucent glossy black glaze with a concentric circular motif applied underneath. This piece is a unique, one of a kind jar that would be great as a functional item or as a design element within any room in your home.
Each piece starts off with hand made small batches of porcelain. A large portion of the clay is then processed by hand to remove all the air bubbles and to ensure that it is completely consistent in moisture content. The porcelain is then attached to the wheel head and the item was then thrown. After the jar was removed from the wheel the lid was thrown to fit and both were set aside to dry over a number of days. Once pieces are partially dry they are placed back on the wheel and trimmed to remove excess clay and weight. This step also allows for the fine tuning of the form and formation of the foot ring. When the trimming was complete and the lid was confirmed to fit it was set aside to completely dry. The drying process takes about a week depending on the humidity that week. After all the moisture had evaporated the piece was loaded into a kiln and heated to 1945 F to make it durable for the glazing process. This firing takes about 12 hours to heat up and another 12-24 to cool down. After the work was unloaded from the kiln a liner glaze was applied followed by a protective layer of wax to prevent glaze from sticking to the lid area and the foot ring. The piece was then set aside once more so that excess moisture could evaporate overnight. Once dry again the piece was sectioned off and various glazes were applied using assorted application and masking methods. When the final glaze was complete retailer and dry the piece was returned to the kiln where it was then heated to 2165F. This final round in the kiln melts the glaze and vitrifies the porcelain in to hard, durable material.

This piece is microwave and dishwasher safe.
