Vintage Little Old Lady Tea Set English Figural Old Grandmother in retailer Cape 1940s, This is a hard to find vintage Little Old Lady entire Tea Set.
This is a hard to find vintage Little Old Lady entire Tea Set, usually you see only the teapot. This listing is for the Teapot, Creamer, and Sugar Bowl. This is a wonderful vintage Little Old Lady or Grandmother tea set that was made in England in the 1940s and is all hand painted.
The wonderful teapot, which is known under both names of Little Old Lady and Grandmother, has a lovely molded head finial and depicts a long dress with a cape and an umbrella. The creamer is in the shape of her with the same colors. Her face becomes the spout of the creamer. The sugar bowl looks the same as the teapot, but without a spout and has handles on both sides.
The character teapot, creamer, and sugar bowl was made by several potteries including Wood and Price Kensington, and not all have maker's marks, although all, like this one, have the impressed Made In England mark.
Each of these teapots I have seen over the years are different, as the color combinations was apparently left up to the individual painters. This one has a really sweet expression on her face and is very colorful, her cape is burgundy and green and the skirt is purple, she has a yellow umbrella and handbag, and the bow under her chin is purple. She is very colorful!
The wonderfully nostalgic Old Lady teapot is in used vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs and has the normal moderate crazing consistent with it's age and material. It is very hard to photograph the crazing, but it is on all the pieces. From the 1940's the set is over 70 years old.
What a wonderful set to display at your next tea gathering - I'm sure it would start a great conversation. FOR DISPLAY ONLY - NOT RECOMMENDED FOR USE.
The teapot measures about 8 inches high by 7 3/4 inches wide (from spout to end of handle) by 5 3/4 inches.
The creamer measures about 4 1/2 inches tall by 4 1/4 inches wide (from spout to end of handle) by 3 1/2 inches deep.
The sugar bowl measures about 6 inches tall by 5 3/4 inches wide (from handle to handle) by 4 inches deep.
Information about the manufacture: When Wood and Sons was formed in 1865 by Thomas Francis Wood its pedigree was created. Thomas was the fifth generation in line to Moses Wood who was brother to Aaron and Ralph. These three giants of the 18th century potteries laid the foundation of the Woods dynasty which was to survive for over 200 years. Thomas, a prominent citizen in the potteries and later to become the Mayor of Burslem, built Wood and Sons into one of the largest companies in the area. By the early years of the 20th century the company had expanded to include a number of potteries, those included the Trent, New Wharf, Stanley and the Alexandra. The latter was run under the name of H.J. Wood and although sharing the New Wharf site, was run as a separate company. H.J. Wood was owned by Thomas's younger brother Henry J. Wood. In 1889 Thomas's son Harry Francis Wood joined the company and by the early part of the century had become its chairman. Using his ability to recognize and nurture talent, together with his undoubted skills as a businessman, he continued the growth of Woods for the next forty years.
