Nice condition copy of "Border Lines of Knowledge in Some Provinces of Medical Science" - An Introductory Lecture, Delivered Before the Medical Class of Harvard University, November 6th, 1861 by OLIVER WENDELL HOLMES. 1862 1st edition; Ticknor and Fields (with "Ticknor & Co." on the spine); Boston. A witty introductory lecture to the new students of medicine at Harvard. Holmes discusses the relations of the sciences to human physiology and chemistry, and also demonstrates that medical science is constantly subject to change and controversy. He strikes out at phrenology and other forms of quackery, but recognizes its good features, such as anthropology. Holmes also notes retailer that medical men have an extraordinary capacity for self-deception, and calls Philippe Ricord (French surgeon and venereologist) the "Voltaire of Pelvic Literature." An important Holmes work in its first edition form. The book concludes with Holmes's poem "The Two Armies."

Condition:
There is light staining at the upper-outer edger of the front cover; fraying to the top and bottom edges of the spine; small cloth tear to the top-right corner of the front cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. The pages are in great condition - clean with no issues found. Overall a very nice copy.
