Chinese Lotus/Bound Feet Shoes Tiny Possibly Altar Shoes Rare, retailer and Regular Modern Chinese Baby Shoes with Dragon Face Size 1 Wearable
Two pairs of vintage Chinese baby shoes One normal wearable.
Two pairs of vintage Chinese baby shoes. One normal, wearable pair is blue with red trim and features a dragon face on each shoe. Underneath is a 1 with Chinese symbols. Opens and closes nicely with snaps, and the colors are bright. This looks to be machine stitched. They measure approximately 4 1/4" long and 2 1/4" wide. The other is a pair of lotus binding shoes for bound feet, sewn with several different patterned fabrics and with a hard heel. The soles are hand stitched as well. I have no idea how old these are; the fabrics are bright and in good condition, the stitching is hand sewn and there is very nice hand embroidery on the toes. They are a lovely pair of handwork, regardless of the cruel intention. They measure approximately 3 1/4" long and 2" wide. Below is from a listing on another site which I believe to be the same as this pair:
"Listed here is a very small and delicate pair of Chinese lotus shoes. These were not intended to be worn. I feel that these are what is known as altar shoes. When a young girl started the foot binding process sometimes the mother would make a tiny pair to place on an altar, burn incense and pray for an easy binding and tiny feet. These are in excellent condition with brilliant colors. Notice the quilted heels, a nice detail. As is often seen especially from missionary sources, this pair is attached to each other with a silk thread. This was probably to keep the pair together. A good item for lotus shoe collectors." retailer
