Our BYERS' CHOICE MAN WITH MANDOLIN is part of the CHRISTMAS WAITS series. Originally, “WAITS” referred to Medieval watchmen who patrolled the streets at night calling out the hour and, occasionally, bestowing blessings on the homeowners. Later this term applied to hired musicians who played at civic events, private parties and weddings. At Christmastime, these paid pipers strolled through the town playing holiday songs in exchange for small treats. By the end of the 18th century, however, most cities no longer hired official Waits and the name came to denote any caroler at Christmas.
Our WAIT is handsomely dressed in a very long, navy blue coat with a collar that is pushed up by a multicolored, striped scarf, gray pants and a light gray hat. He has gray hair and white eyebrows. This musician's particular instrument is a clarinet which he holds in his right arm, along with the clarinet case. Our happy WAIT is in fine, vintage condition with no issues. He has retained his original WAITS hangtag retailer. Our WAIT measures approximately 13” tall and is signed “BYERS 89” at the back on the top of his base.
