Carnival Glass Bowl - Imperial retailer Heavy Grape

This is a lovely example of a carnival glass bowl made by Imperial Glass. The design is a variation of their Heavy Grape pattern with no quilting. Held up to the light, this dish is an amethyst colour with the raised grapes in the centre ranging from pale to vivid purple. The finish has been applied well and gives a metallic, smokey appearance with an iridescent shimmer.

In great condition, the dish stands on a collar which is about 3.5 inches/9cm in diameter, the surface underneath being decorated with a retailer star design. Overall measurements are a little over 2.25 inches/6cm high and approximately 7.5 inches/19cm across the open top. The shape has a flat base with wavy sides which slope up to finish in 8 ruffles. Internally, the sides are smooth and the base is decorated with raised grapes surrounded by vine leaves against a stippled background.

The Imperial Glass Company was founded in Ohio 1901. Initially the company focussed on crystal glass but soon began to manufacture carnival glass and production continued until the early 1930s, with their line of iridescent glass being reintroduced in the 1960s. Imperial made carnival glass in a range of shapes and patterns but were known especially for the purple and smoke grey colourways. Known as Heavy Grape, this pattern was one of the earlier designs introduced by Imperial, initially called 'Colonial and Grapes' and at one time marketed as 'Niagara' - the name of a specific grape varied.
