“Tsugarunuri” Japanese Lacquered Cups "kaku"

This cup is finished using “Tsugarunuri,” a traditional lacquering technique dating from the 17th century. This technique uses Japanese lacquer, also known as Urushi, which is a material made from oak sap, mostly used for luxury utensils in Japan. There are several famous lacquering techniques in Japan, but Tsugarunuri is regarded as one of the best.

It is coated blue or orange lacquer over beige lacquer. It is simple and clear contrast.


Tsugarunuri is a traditional lacquering technique originating in the northern part of Japan. It is a long process, with each project, including these cups, taking several months to complete. To achieve richness and depth of color, several coats of lacquer are applied and allowed to dry. Once the lacquering is complete, the dried retailer lacquer is scraped off to make beautiful and complex patterns. Because the process is done by hand, no two patterns will ever be the same. Your cup will be the only one of its kind in the world!
