1880s Botanical Print
A rare supplement botanical print circa 1880 from 'The Garden. An Illustrated Weekly Journal of Horticulture in all its Branches'.
London, 1871-1926 • Founder and editor, William Robinson
The publication included an original antique color chromolithograph (of which this an early example) by either the Belgian firm G. Severeyns or its successor J.L. Goffart both of which were renowned for their fine craftsmanship.
The garden was a justly famous botanical journal which introduced many plants to the world through its well written text and unique style of illustration. Its focus was on plants for the house and garden and often featured esoteric, often tropical flowers that were beautiful but unlikely to ever be seen or grown at the time. This example is a beautifully colourful lithograph of the ' THE YELLOW CALLA ( RICARDIA HASTATA).
The original date DEC 11th 1880 can be clearly seen printed on the top left corner of the page above the title ' THE GARDEN'.
