This shirt-and-tie accessory is of a design popular from the mid-1930s through the.
This shirt-and-tie accessory is retailer of a design popular from the mid-1930s through the World War II period. It has a simple clip that slides onto the shirt placket at the desired height. The necktie is then slipped through the swag chain loop. The clip is concealed behind the tie, which is held in place by the chain. The dark gold-toned chain appears to be constructed of small cylindrical bead-like links, attached internally. This tie bar was made by the Forstner Chain Corporation, which was founded in 1920 by William and Walter Forstner in Irvington, New Jersey. Over the years the company made silver, gold, and gold-filled snake chain necklaces and bracelets, cuff links, tie bars, earrings and other jewelry, and other accessories such as key chains and suspenders. The unique chain design found on this piece is a great example of Forstner quality. The company appears to have ceased production in the 1980s. Please note: the tie in the photo is not included!
Size: the clip portion measures about 2-1/4 inches in length; the chain loop will accommodate a tie width of roughly 2-1/2 to 3 inches at the level it passes through the loop.
Materials: this item is made of 12K gold filled base metal.
Marks: stamped on the back of the clip is “FORSTNER / 1/20-12KT. G.F.*”.
Age: in general, this type of tie clip with a swag chain was being made by several companies in the 1930s and 1940s. Neither this particular Forstner mark nor design could be connected with a specific year. We estimate that it was made in the early 1940s.
Condition: this tie bar is in very good vintage condition, with no issues with the clip or chain, and no noticeable signs of wear.
