There are two kinds of Jade. Nephrite Jade which is what the ancient Chinese mined since the early Neolithic period from 5500 to 1900 B.C. It was fashioned into utilitarian objects to start with such as an Axe Blade. Knives, eating utensils, plates, cups etc. because of it's ability to be carved. Not to mention the intrinsic luster of which Jade is so well known and sought after.

Then around 3,000 B.C., Grade A Jadeite was discovered which is much harder than Nephrite. The Emperor then wanted it made into Jewelry and other things such as decorations and statues.
The emperor had it sewn into his Robes so one could always hear when the Emperor was approaching.

There have been wars fought in ancient China over 1 single
jade carving or statue. Jade is very special.
