RIDING THE STANG

Engraved by R&D.Havell after George Walker

for "The Costume of Yorkshire" by George Walker

Published by Robinson and Son, Leeds 1814

A fine original aquatint depicting the old custom of "riding the stang" in Yorkshire.

Walker describes the tradition in detail which is intended to ridicule quarrelling husbands and their wives.

In this case the argument is seen through the door of the pub. The pub is aptly named "the Good Woman" and the somewhat chauvinistic pub sign displays a woman without retailer a head.

Dated in the plate.(1813)

From a first edition of Walker's "The Costume of Yorkshire" accompanied by the interesting related text in English and French.

A fascinating record of Yorkshire life in Regency England first issued as a part work in 1813 to 1814 and published as a complete book in 1814.

An attractive print, ideal for framing and display.

Fine condition other than some faint spotting in the margin and upper border.
Free of repairs or restoration. The superb original colours remain bright and fresh.

Approx. 12" x 8" (300mm x 200mm) image area only.

Approx. 14.5" x 10.5" (370mm x 260mm) overall.

Printed on heavy grade paper, blank verso, not folded.
