✦✦A Brief History:✦✦
In Mandarin it is Qipao, and Cantonese is it Cheongsam. The dress has a long history originating from the Manchu people of the Qing Dynasty (1600's), but the body hugging, tight fit style we know today rose to popularity from 1920-1940 mainly in Shanghai. It was a dress enjoyed by celebrities, singers and figureheads. Some of which were voted into Vogue for best dressed women. With the side-slit running high, qipao dresses were originally worn with trousers until the influence of western fashion saw the demise of the trouser-dress pairing. Finally, after the collar was raised and the sleeves shortened, the qipao dress became more of a ball gown, designed to impress. Nowadays, as seen in our shop, the qipao dress enjoys a variety of styles and designs.
