In KURMAHA avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as a turtle. In the ongoing saga of battle between the Gods and asuras, on one occasion the gods were suddenly losing all their strength due to a curse by sage Durvasa.
The Devtas(Gods) then approached Lord Vishnu for help retailer. Lord Vishnu then asked them to churn the ocean of milk for obtaining the Devine nector of immortality (Amrit). Both the devatas and the asuras churned the ocean using the serpent Vasuki as the rope and Mt Mandara as the churning stick ,which started sinking due to it's heavy mass .
This was when Lord Vishnu took the form of Kurmaha ( turtle ), and held the mountain on his broad back until the ocean was fully churned and the nector of immortality(Amrit) for the gods was obtained .
