Fat Lava ceramics designate, in a somewhat reductive way, the productions of German factories and studios of the 1950s and 1970s. It takes its name from the effects of embossed enamelling, frequently used with orange-yellow colors, which give the surface of the pieces a characteristic appearance of bubbling lava.
Exports to France or Italy were comparatively much smaller, probably countered by the massive production of centres such as Vallauris or Accolay and by a different taste of the public.
The term Fat Lava first appeared as the title of the German ceramics exhibition held in London in July-August 2006.
