Three small portrait engravings commissioned by the Society of the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in the 1st half of the 19th century. All were engraved by the finest engravers of the period, two by Edward Scriven, one by William Holl. Between 1826 & 1848, the society which was based in London, produced inexpensive books & journals for those who did not have access to a formal education. I believe these were removed from books which they produced. They would look splendid in small black frames or together in 1 frame. The portraits are of:
Ambrosio Pare 1510 - 1590. a French barber surgeon, known as 1 of the fathers of surgery. He was a pioneer of battlefield medicine.
Nicolao Copernico, 1471 - 1543, known to many as Copernicus a Polish astronomer & mathematician.
Johan De Witt, 1625 - 1672, an important figure in Dutch politics. He came to a grim end during a riot in The Hague, when he was lynched & partially eaten alive. Some believe William of retailer Orange was the instigator of the lynching.
The prints are in good condition, the De Witt engraving has a bend to the lower right corner, their approximate measurements are: 18 cm x 10 1/2 cm.
