Vintage Hand Painted Geisha Girl China with Grapes / Vintage Japanese China / retailer Oriental Ladies on China/ Geishaware Purple Geisha Girl China
BEAUTIFUL and UNUSUAL This colorful china dish features oriental ladies or geisha.
BEAUTIFUL and UNUSUAL! This colorful china dish features oriental ladies or geisha in a lovely garden with an oriental house in the background. Soft colors blend together to create a lovely pastoral scene. Dressed in orange, green, and pink kimonos, the ladies are engaged in friendly conversation. The colors are vivid and were hand-painted prior to glazing. The purple rim is rather unusual, especially with the grape theme. This was most likely made to copy a European motif, the grapes, which was common practice after World War II. The shape is also unusual with curved handles on each side.
BACKGROUND: From my research on this piece, it appears to be a vintage Japanese design. Although there's no maker's mark, it follows the color, artistry, and stylistic design of Japanese china from around the 1950's. Geisha-ware was popular at this time and came in a variety of dishes: hot chocolate sets, bowls, pitchers, trays, tea pot and tea cups, lotus bowls, etc. The orangey-red rims are a distinctive element. Purple is unusual. Whether you think of this as folk art or a memento, if you like oriental design, it makes a fun and unusual keepsake, especially as a jewelry dish!
Vintage dishes are a fun way to hold your favorite pair of earrings, rings, or other small jewelry items! I love using vintage dishes to hold jewelry on my dresser, in the powder rooms, on retailer my vanity and in the kitchen. It's a great way to keep from loosing jewelry, especially earrings! I think you'll like it too!
