Retailer Around the Fire

One of the first documents that really drew me into the realm of these two, happened to be a book of letters exchanged between them. They are Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, appearing here to the left and right respectively. The letters dated back to their formative years at university; the forties and fifties, roundabout the time they were beginning to write profusely. The letters were beautiful, depicting a fantastic social scene, a bit like the content of Kerouac's Windblown World compilation.

I remember having to present a poem for analysis at university; the subject Modern Poetry. We weren't given free-reign to choose; there was a list of poems we had to select from. I chose A Supermarket in California by Allen Ginsberg. The lecturer reminded me of Uncle Monty from Withnail and I, so it was very funny to me that; when my presentation rambled onto the topic of homosexuality, my mentioning something about Ginsberg having blown Kerouac but Kerouac's never having returned the favour, the lecturer promptly intervened and advised me that the information was auxiliary to the task.

What can I say about this image though? I drew it not because I believe in friendship; friendship, in my book, is a phenomena existent between free individuals. Rather, I drew this one because it depicts two young men gathered around an apparatus that has been such a force for good grace amongst men and women and which, I fear, is becoming deliberately lost to state-sanctioned intervention; wolves in the clothing of sheep.
