Japanese Woodblock Print retailer Choshun On A Journey To Yedo Antique 1920s

This is a beautiful antique Japanese woodblock print from the 1920s after a design by the Ukiyo E master Miyagawa Choshun 1683-1753

Choshun was trained by artists from the Tosa and Kano schools. He was also a pupil of the great UKiyo E designer Moronobu. But Choshun develloped a style of his own and founded the Miyagawa school. He and his pupils made great Ukiyo E art but they were unique in their approach to do only paintings and no woodblock designs. Choshun mostly painted courtesans.

This woodblock print is made after his most famous painting, On A Journey To Yedo, this is Edo as we say now, the present day Tokyo. This painting originally has three more beauties depicted but this woodblock print only took the design of the horse and two travellers as its subject. They can be seen in a large landscape setting with probably Mount Fuiji in the distance.

Good impression. Still beautiful colours. The print has a thin paper backing and is mounted on top to it s original cardboard. It still has it s original protective sheet with text in both Japanese and English. The sheet is in poor condition but the information can still be fully seen. Sheet and cardboard have spots. Signature and red seal.
