- Highlights of this painting: The little girl is oblivious to the waves creeping in behind her as she is intently digging for a certain treasure. The texture of the clouds will grab you along with the sprays of the surf. Although I paint with my appreciation of the impressionist period, which appears best at a slight distance, I will forever enjoy looking close up to see how those muted appearances are created.
Background of this work:

I took the photo in 2014, and finally painted her in 2016. The under painting is a green hue that peeks out occasionally to darken and give a overcast sunset feel to the work. No one else is on the beach, which suggests she is not trying to play with family or friends, but is purely intent on her purpose at present. I imagined what she might be thinking as I took the photo. Was she thinking about pirates that once pulled to the shore and as they dropped their chest full of jewels and gold? Did a pearl necklace and gold rings fall into the sand, and she just might be able to find them? The darkening of the sky creates the effect of a possible storm brewing, but the yellow suited girl is not concerned or distracted from her quest in the least.
