Ankh - The Sign of Life

Amulets are among the most widely distributed artifacts of ancient Egypt. The belief was that the many different symbols used as amulets offered protection and imparted their supernatural powers to the wearer in this and in the next world. Amulets were made from early times in a variety of materials such as faiance, bronze, glass, all sorts of stones, and precious metals.

The Ankh is the hieroglyph for LIFE and resembles a shortarmed cross with a drop shaped loop as the top element. The lines of the symbol vary somewhat. This graceful ornament appears in a wall decoration of the XVIII dynasty, about 1500 BC., which was excavated in Thebes and published by the great British archeologist Sir William Flinders Petrie in 1895.
