Santa Clara Style Miniature Blackware Buffalo Figurine
This cute Santa Clara style mini blackware buffalo figurine looks as if he is about to charge! It was traditionally fired & smoked in the style of Santa Clara Pueblo; they are famous for their blackware pottery! It is signed Dorothy Gutierrez, who lived and worked with her husband, Paul, in Santa Clara Pueblo for decades. It measures approx 1.75" H x 1.75" L x 1.25" D. His body is polished black w contrasting textured matte black coat. Paul and Dorothy Gutierrez had a long collaboration making small retailer clay animals and mudheads together for decades. Dorothy handbuilt the animals of native clay, and Paul stone polished each piece. They were married in1965. Dorothy is of Navajo heritage (b.1940). Paul, was from Santa Clara Pueblo (1936-2017.) They earned numerous awards including: Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show, Santa Fe Indian Market, Heard Museum Guild Indian Art Fair & Market and the Gallup Intertribal.
