Brooch - Pendant Mexican Convertible Sterling & Abalone Inlay Geometric Design on Large Domed retailer Disk Green + Pink Iridescent Shell Signed HJA
This Deco-ish Mexican Modernist piece is a brooch pin with a loop for wearing.
This Deco-ish Mexican Modernist piece is a brooch pin with a loop for wearing on a chain as a pendant if you wish. It is a domed disk retailer in shape, handcrafted of Sterling silver and very skillfully flush-inlaid with a beautiful geometric design in colorful green and pink iridescent abalone shell pieces. The main fastener is a hinged pin with a rollover safety clasp. Sorry, a chain is not included with this piece.
Size: the brooch is about 2-1/4 inches in diameter.
Materials: Sterling silver, Abalone shell.
Marks: stamped on the back of the brooch is: “HECHO EN MEXICO / STERLING / H.J.A. 925”. The silversmith “H.J.A.” was not identified beyond the initials.
Age: the Mexican government Eagle/Number mark system started in 1948, lasting until about 1980. The Letter/Number mark system began at that time and is still in use today. This brooch/pendant has neither of these government marks, therefore it can be assumed that it was made before 1948. It is estimated to have been made in the mid-1940s.
Condition: this brooch is in good vintage condition. The silver surfaces show the typical signs of age and use wear in the form of tiny scratches, dents, and nicks. The piece has not been polished by Astra's Shadow shop and the surfaces have varying degrees of tarnish. Under magnification, small dark oxidation areas can be seen on the front. There is more dark oxidation visible on the back than on the front. This brooch would polish up nicely with a rouge cloth, if less of a vintage look is desired. The pin and catch are in good working order.
