Antique Meiji retailer Arita Hizen Porcelain Soup Rice Bowl and Lid / Japan Circa 1900, Lovely Arita Bowl with Lid which can also be used as another bowl is made of porcelain.
Lovely Arita Bowl with Lid, which can also be used as another bowl, is made of porcelain and decorated in polychrome enamels with cross-hatch highlights in gold. Each bowl is decorated with 6 panels, three of which are circular and three that are diamond in shape. The maker's mark can be seen on the base of the smaller bowl.
The condition of the smaller bowl is excellent. The larger bowl has an older hairline crack that extends from the rim to the base, and is slightly yellowed - this can be seen upon close inspection. See photo #9. After filling with water, a few drops of water were able to seep through the crack after about 5 minutes.
Bowl with lid measures 4 1/2" in height, the larger bowl measures 6 1/8" across the rim and 2 1/4" across the foot, the smaller bowl measures 5 1/4" across the rim and 2 1/16" across the foot. Together they weigh 1 lb, retailer 1.6 oz.
This is a beautiful bowl. It would make a great display piece for a bookshelf, curio cabinet, kitchen shelf, and provide lovely storage for jewelry, q-tips or cottonballs!
