Just as we didn't have any control over our physical birth, we do not have any control over our spiritual birth. The phrase born again means born from above. The new birth is a spiritual birth, a sovereign act of God, where salvation is gifted to the believer the moment he or she comes to faith in Christ. "who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God" (John 1:13). This is called justification, in which a sinner is saved immediately from sin's penalty and granted eternal life by grace through faith. A believer is justified by the blood of Christ and is made right with God. Being right with God means being at peace with God. "Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1).
