This lovely serving bowl, made by the Homer Laughlin China Company, is white and has a pale green border around the edge and an Asian scene (of flowers and a pagoda) in the center. It is marked on the bottom “Homer Laughlin” and “E 8 N”, indicating that it was made in May of 1928.
The Homer Laughlin China Company was founded by brothers Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin. It began operating in East Liverpool, Ohio (as Laughlin Pottery) around 1873 and moved to Newell, West Virginia in 1907. Its most popular line of pottery is Fiestaware, which was introduced in 1936, and items such as this old serving bowl are hard to find.
The diameter of this dish is about 8 7/8 inches.
This bowl has no chips or cracks. There is light fading of the green color around the edge and crazing, which is to be expected of something this old. The lack of scuff marks on the bottom suggest that this was not used very much and was probably a display item.
