This is Natural Australian opal that has been sliced and set on top of natural Queensland iron ore material with adhesive. This technique of making a doublet with an opal can really enhance the amazing quality of the stone, by putting it on a dark background it pushes the colors and the pin fire to the top, making the viewer see the intensity of the stone. An opal doublet is a thin layer of opal, backed by a swart mineral such as ironstone, basalt, or obsidian. The darker backing emphasizes the play of color, and results in a more attractive display than a lighter potch.

Surface polish is very good. These are hand cut, not machine cut, so there can be a little variation to the thickness. These would be perfect to set in silver or gold, they can be wire wrapped, bead worked or set in polymer clay too. I personally think this would be best as a pair of earrings retailer since they match so beautifully.
