Gems retailer for the Fireside (1883) Literary Treasure from Great Minds - Decorative Leather Binding - O.H. Tiffany - Elegantly Illustrated

This listing is for a vintage 1883 book featuring a Library of Prose retailer and Verse written by such authors as Shakespeare, Longfellow, Milton, Moore, Burns, Tennyson, Holmes, Dickens and many more. The book was edited by Rev. Otis H. Tiffany, D.D. and published by Bay State Publishing Company in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Some of the authors are unknown, as one of the stories (on page 120) is titled "Charley's Opinion of the Baby" and tells the short story from the older brother's point of view when the baby comes home and basically takes his place as the baby in the family....very amusing. There is also the "Old Wife's Kiss", which is a very touching story about a wife at her husband's funeral. Other stories I saw as I looked through the book are "Maidenhood" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, "Voices of the Dead" by John Cumming, and "The Day Dream" by A. Tennyson, just to name a few.

The book states it has 863 pages, but the last page is numbered 912 because in the printed paging of the book, the full page plates were not numbered. The book is nicely illustrated throughout and there are also full page pictures of some of the authors.

The book is in very good condition with just two pages loose in the front of the book where some of the photos of the authors are. The binding is intact and the leather covered front and back boards are still attached. There is some wear to the corners and edges of spine. All in all, it is a great looking book and would be a great addition to anyone's collection.
