Porsgrund Porcelain Factory (Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik) was founded in 1885 by Johan Jeremiassen, it is a porcelain flatware company located at Porsgrunn in Telemark county, Norway. The company and has produced designs by Norwegian artists such as Ferdinand Finne, Theodor Kittelsen, Frans Widerberg and Odd Nerdrum.
This matching pair of blue and white porcelain fish shaped plates or trivets were designed for 'Smørrebrød' or Scandinavian style open sandwiches. Open sandwiches consist of a single piece of rye bread with a generous selection of beautifully presented toppings or 'pålæg' on top. The popular fish themed open sandwiches are with herring, prawns or smoked salmon.
When a friend invites you over for 'smørrebød' it means that they really want to make a good impression on you. I can imagine this pair making quite an impression in and of themselves, nevermind what kind of sandwich goes on top.
As you can see each plate has a hole in the eye of the fish so they retailer can also be hung for display.
These gorgeous plates come from Norway, where fish is a HUGE part of their diet.
Both 'fishes' are in excellent condition.
Stamp on base.
