Green-and-gold covered 1872 "Complete Poetical Works of Alfred retailer Tennyson" Author's Household Edition

Alfred Lord Tennyson is not as widely read as he once was, although it is possible that he was never as retailer widely read as he is purported to have been. Rather like people who claim on surveys that they only watch PBS, people who praised Tennyson in the mid-19th century (when he was writing) might have been reading penny dreadfuls.

Which is a shame. Because -- despite the ways in which his writing is very clearly dated in its style -- he's well worth reading. His discussions of loss -- loss of life, loss of history, loss of hope -- still make you catch your breath. No matter how divided our world is or may ever be, Tennyson's memorial poems make irrefutable the universality of grief.
