The glorious American Pelican painting by John James Audubon (apprx. 1830) makes this bin a truly wonderful addition to any room where the black and white chiaroscuro will truly add genuine chic.
These classic oval bins are made for me in Wisconsin. To create a lasting and lovely decoupaged item, they go through many different stages: they are first given a chemical acid wash to remove any oils, or grease and grime, etc. and thus make the metal ready to take on the primer, which is red oxide (the same used in automobile body-shop work). After this primer (2 coats) is thoroughly dry, they are given 2 coats of paint before any decoupage work is done..
Then they are given four coats of gloss polymer sealer.
Although they are called ‘wastebaskets' or ‘waste-bins', they have many other terrific uses: to hold magazines, catalogues, or newspapers,. Or, filled with dried flowers, they make a retailer splendid focal point in a (summer-empty) fireplace . Or to hold your craft items, your knitting wools, etc.
I use mine to hold my weekly reading material; magazines, TV guide, etc. next to my armchair.
