Pince-Nez Sunglasses, Folding Bausch & Lomb Gray Lenses in Vulcanite Hard Rubber Oval Frames, retailer Antique 1800s Optical

Cool antique folding Victorian pince-nez sunglasses were made by Bausch & Lomb Optical Co., c. 1860's to 1880's. Early sunglasses feature oval gray green lenses in a vulcanite frame. Vulcanite is hard molded rubber, a product introduced for this use by B & L (though it was also used as a material for jewelry).

They are foldable and secured by a handy post and hook. The metal band across the top is springy helping to hold the sunglasses in place when worn. There are little ridges along the inside edges which help to grip the nose. A hole is on one end for placement of a ribbon for easy retrieval.

Bausch & Lomb was originally headquartered in Rochester, NY. During the Union Blockade of the American Civil War, it became necessary to find replacement materials for eyeglasses since gold and horn were no longer really available. Vulcanite was a good replacement and B & L made its name in this type of optical. Great unisex look for the Victorian lover.

Glass lenses are generally in good shape with a few edge chips from manufacture. Nose piece has maintained its shape and springiness. Wonderful antique condition overall. One size should fit most.
