Beautiful Small Byzantine Wooden Treen retailer Secret Book Box circa 1930

BEAUTIFUL SMALL ANTIQUE BYZANTINE CARVED WOODEN TREEN SECRET BOOK BOX MID C20th

This is a lovely piece of Byzantine treen in the form of a small wooden box hidden in the shape of a book.

Entirely hand crafted with a simple folk art style to the work, it is carved to the front with St George atop his horse slaying the Dragon in relief against a textured backround which has some gold coloured decoration.

The rear of the book has a double headed Eagle, again carved in relief against the same background.

The front has a shaped door which can be pulled to open the box. Inside is plain with a simple metal hand nailed hinge.

The top, bottom and edge of the box are designed to look like a book with incised lines to simulate pages with a gilt edge. The spine looks just like a leather book and on a bookshelf this simulates a small book.

A fabulous piece for the admirer of this type of folk art treen or a retailer wonderful Christmas, Birthday or Valentines gift or even to put something even more special inside.

Width: 2 1/2" - (65mm), plus pointed area of 1/2" = 3" - (75mm) total width.
