The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing retailer the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created in a Columban monastery in either Britain or Ireland and may have had contributions from various Columban institutions from both Britain and Ireland. It is believed to have been created c. 800 AD.

Each item begins as a piece of sheet metal, copper, bronze, brass or nickel. After a pattern is transferred to the metal, the piece is etched in a salt-water solution. Each piece is hand cut, sanded, and polished. A patina may be applied or it may be hand painted with dye oxide. A clear polymer coating is applied
