Cute Mini Blackware Squirrel

This lucky Santa Clara mini blackware squirrel figurine is holding an acorn! This was traditionally fired & smoked in the syle of Santa Clara; this Pueblo is famous for their blackware. It was made by husband and wife team Paul and Dorothy Gutierrez, who lived in Santa Clara Pueblo. This little squirrel measures approx 1- 5/8" H x 1- 7/8" L x 1" D. His body is polished black & the nut is a contrasting matte black. Paul and Dorothy Gutierrez had a long collaboration for decades making small clay retailer animals and mudheads. Dorothy handbuilt the animals of native clay, and Paul stone polished each piecel.They were married in1965. Dorothy has a Navajo heritage (b.1940). Paul, was from Santa Clara Pueblo (1936-2017.) They earned numerous awards including: Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show, Santa Fe Indian Market, Heard Museum Guild Indian Art Fair & Market and the Gallup Intertribal.
