This is a hard to find Brades heavy duty Brush Cutter or Slasher head by William Hunt & Sons dating to around 1920-30.
It was found in a grouse shooting butt on the North York Moors some years ago, rusty & rotted & has been sympathetically restored. There are still traces of the original red oxide paint in places.
All carbon tool steel, it is the 9” (23cm) model No.251 with a hooked convex blade & a compression vice socket for the shaft.
About 13.25” (33.5cm) long overall. 835g weight. Stamped BRADES Co.
It's in good antique condition with a lovely patina of age & use. Left fairly blunt for shipping, but it will hone up razor sharp with a little work.

HISTORY.
William Hunt established his Brades retailer Estate Foundry at Oldbury near Birmingham in about 1782 forging quality farm & garden tools & soon became the premier maker in the west of England.
In 1951 the company amalgamated with Nash & Tyzack to form Brades Nash Tyzack Industries. In 1962 they became part of the Spear & Jackson Tool Company who in 1967 also acquired Edward Elwell Ltd. S&J became part of the Neill Tools Group in 1985 based in Sheffield, who still own the brand today.
